One of my favorite days of the year, when my older children were younger and still in public school, was March 2nd. Their school always had a huge event for Read Across America Day/ Dr. Seuss's Birthday. Each classroom had a party set up, fun guests would join and have set times to come in and read their favorite story to the class. It was an entire day devoted to reading, craft activities, and celebration. After they got older, and we began homeschooling, we no longer attended the Read Across America Day event, however, we did celebrate at home and often with our homeschool groups, just on a much smaller scale.
Now that we have started our parenting journey over, and our Littles are a bit older, I am excited to start the Read Across America Day tradition again with them. Below are some ideas to help you celebrate Read Across America Day.
1. Celebrate Dr. Seuss style! It is his birthday, after all. The crazier the better, right? Wake your kids up and serve them Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast. Make it silly and fun. For a snack, serve some Goldfish in honor of "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." Bake a birthday cake together, and sing Happy Birthday. Throughout the day, read all your Dr. Seuss favorites. Follow it up with The Cat in the Hat movie.
2. Host a Book Swap Party with your homeschool group, mom's group, or neighborhood. You can even invite a couple of "Mystery Guests" to come and read their favorite children's books. You can do a craft and serve a snack to everyone. Print out some Appreciation Certificates to give to the mystery guests for giving you their time.
3. Partner with your local animal shelter, or reading rovers program. Gather kids together to read out loud to the animals. Reading out loud to a parent, teacher or in class can be very scary, but reading to a dog or other animal takes the fear of messing up away, and kids will begin to improve their reading skills.
4. Have a Book Drive in your community. You can pair this with inviting mystery guests to come and read their favorite stories. Donate all the books from the book drive to a local Family Services program that serves local Foster Children.
