This last week, our family had been going stir crazy, so we hopped in the car, and drove across the state line into Las Vegas, Nevada. It was exactly what our family needed to unwind and relax. There were so many fun things we had wanted to do, but we just didn't have time for them all. One thing we made sure to make time for was The Discovery Children's Museum.
This museum is a fun, hands-on, engaging place. My kids, ranging from 3yrs old to 10yrs old, had so much fun, they didn't want to leave. Before I get into all of the fun activities the museum had to offer, let me assure you that they take their Social Distancing Practices seriously. You can find their new guidelines here. It is important to remember that when attending, you may have to wait outside, as the museum has put a limit on how many families can attend at one time. Also, note that masks are required at all times inside the museum.
WATER WORLD
As soon as we walked in, my kids could not contain their excitement to get to explore. They went straight into Water World, where they got to play with water in a variety of ways. They got to redirect the flow of water with balls, fill up tubes, and see how water can move things and make electricity. I think they would have stayed right in this room for our entire visit if it wasn't for us ushering them on to the next room to explore. *Keep in mind, this is a water exhibit. You and your child will get wet. They do have mini raincoats for the children to wear, but it will depend on if they have enough available.
DISCOVERY LAB
This exhibit is newer but don't let that fool you. This space is designed to get kids to be creative and use their critical thinking skills. It is very interactive and hands-on. There is a workshop attached to the Lab, where you can use a 3D printer, kiln, and a laser cutter.
FANTASY FESTIVAL
This area is a kid's imagination dream. There is a big climbing castle and a pirate ship to explore. There is even a stage where you can dress up and let out your in actor or actress. This was probably my kids' absolute favorite place to play (once we got them past Water World) There is even a little Puppet Theater where kids can put on their own puppet show.
YOUNG AT ART
This area is designed to let your child go crazy and let out their inner artist. There are different stations set up to paint, create, cut, and glue. Kids have free range to create whatever they want (with parent supervision of course) The decor in here brings out the creativity in you with its whimsical walls and colorful murals.
ECO CITY
This exhibit is built like a little city. Kids can explore different careers as a mechanic, a bank teller, a grocery store clerk, a pediatrician, and more. Kids can also get to see how an x-ray machine works, how to use a cash register, and even shop for groceries. Your little one just might be inspired by this little city in their future careers.
PATENT PENDING
This area is designed to bring out your inner scientist and inventor. This was probably one of my favorite exhibits because when I watched my littles explore in this area, I could see their eyes light up in wonder as they built a tower and watched it fall from an earthquake. They squealed in delight when their little invention flew up and out of the tube from the force of the air.
TODDLER TOWN
If I had a baby or toddler, this would be my favorite area. There is a sensory room off to the side for kiddos who need a sensory break. There is a place for crawlers to explore and have fun without big kids trampling on them. The toddler space also has a craft area set up. And there is a comfortable Nursing Nook for nursing moms. They also have a resource library to help parents with developmental milestones, parenting books, and more.
THE SUMMIT TOWER
This is a huge 3 story Climbing Structure that goes through the entire 3 story museum. However, it was currently closed, so we were not able to explore the Tower. From what I was able to see, it looked super fun and we can't wait to go back so we can try it out.
All in all, this was probably the highlight of our entire trip. If you are a homeschooling family, this place is a great field trip because there are so many things to learn and do for your kids. If you are ever visiting the Las Vegas area, we highly recommend putting this on your must-do list. We spent 4 hours at the museum exploring, and honestly, my kids would have been happy to stay even longer.
